Tonight I listened to Larry King on the radio for CNN. He is an excellant interviewer and had both the govenors of Louisianna and Mississippi on several times. The Governors are in shock and as lost as their constituants. From all accounts both states were poorly prepared for a disaster of this magnitude. Highways are out, electricity out, no food, no drinking water, no medicine, no shelters --nothing available for over 1,000,000 of our fellow citizens.
These states have been aware of the pending time bomb of a huge hurricane for ever. And now it has happened and may very well happen again this hurricane season--or next.
When the tidal wave wiped out Indonesia, we had out navy and its ships there pronto. Tanker were supplying fresh water. food was being delivered, medical care was available--all courtesy of the United States.
It is hurricane season, forecasters for months have been showing the storms lining up. In fact as I write another tropical storm is forming.
WHY WAS OUR OWN MILITARY NOT DIVERTED TO THIS AREA--OR NEAR BY ON STANDBY FOR THIS TRAGEDY? THERE ARE ONLY 7,000 NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS IN MISSISSIPPI AND LOUISIANNA.
The reason for the bold type is my frustration with our government. We need to have sufficient troops both Federal and State to handle our own crisis. This is a monumental mistake--or gamble if you will, and I'm afraid hundreds of lives will be lost because of it. I realize we are stretched thin fighting that terrorist war, but that is no excuse for leaving our own shores in such a vulnerable position.
I heard a weather scientist admit today that he knew this type of damage was posible because of the shear size of Katrina. Well--he was right, the Feds were wrong and unprepared, and part of our country may never be the same again.
And---for several hurricane seasons, more and more storms are forming so this is not going to be an isolated incident.
I wouldn't leave my puppy Yodi stranded in this way and our President and Governors should not leave it's citizens this way either. This is not right.
